We recently had a nice discussion on our Facebook and Instagram pages in regard to a hypothetically project for a Drag and Drive Civic EG. Specifically, we used the idea of our '92 Civic CX as the base for the project. The goals are to run mid to high 11s, maintain A/C, be reliable and need a minimal amount of maintenance.Â
There are a lot of different directions a project like that can take. It was fun discussing ideas with our community including hearing about your own firsthand experiences with setups.Â
- Turbocharge the B16 engine? Solid option since that is the engine already in the car and there are proven A/C compatible setups that will easily meet our goals (and in theory allow room to grow). The downside of there is a lot of parts in that engine bay at that point so dealing with heat issues is a concern.
- Naturally Aspirated K24 Swap? Another solid option. This would definitely hurt the budget for a project like this in order to do it right. But a basic piston/rod K24 block with a built K20 head will easily get us to the power level we need to meet our goals. Bad Grandpa 2.0 perhaps? An interesting path for sure.
- Supercharger. Unfortunately, this falls down the list pretty quickly as the setups that can make the power, we would want to enjoy the car are not A/C friendly. The one option that would make sense is an old school Jackson Racing kit with the LHT intercooler parts. Probably difficult to find and do right.
- Nitrous!!! I love this idea. But after diving into nitrous bottle refills in my area it is basically impossible to do. No one fills nitrous anymore in the Orlando area from my research.
- Nitro Injection. This idea was mainly built around the possibility of using our 1998 Integra Type R for this project. Let's say we put a nice 2.0L sleeved, rod / piston engine in that car. Run the stock fuel system but then build a secondary fuel system to run on Nitro at the drag strip. In our experience we can get the engine to run reliable on the nitro, but can it make the power we would want it to? This is probably the most challenging idea with potential. Challenges are fun.
So, there we have it. Lots of great ideas. Not sure if this project will happen but it was fun having the conversation. Stay Tuned.
